Why aren't you happy right now?
Is it because you're waiting for something to change? Are you going to feel unfulfilled until certain things in your life happen?
Guess what? Even if everything falls into place the way you wanted it to, you still may not be happy!
That's because people tend to view the world with a "bigger and better" mindset. As soon as something good happens, they focus on the even better thing that could happen next. They don't allow themselves to appreciate what just happened. As a result, they never feel truly content.
So, how do you escape the clutches of this mindset?
You have to decide to be happy!
That's right. Being happy is a conscious choice. Luckily, though, it's not a hard choice to make. Here are 4 tips to help you do it:
1. Smell the roses.
Yes, life is hectic, but if you spend all your time feeling rushed and stressed, you'll never be happy. You've got to give yourself a little bit of time each day to relax, dream, and appreciate the small things. Listen to that song you love, take a walk and enjoy the sunset, or read a little bit of that book you've been dying to check out. That way, you'll spend at least a portion of your day enjoying your life exactly as it is right now.
2. Be grateful.
If you're truly grateful for the good things you have in life, you automatically switch your mindset from "don't" to "do". In other words, you'll be able to focus on all the great things you do have without worrying about chasing the stuff you don't have.
3. Enjoy the journey.
Choosing to be happy right now doesn't mean letting go of all your goals. You can still chase your dreams; just don't focus solely on achieving them. Instead, enjoy the journey you take to get to them. After all, achieving big goals means accomplishing a bunch of little goals along the way. If you allow yourself to be joyful about each hurdle you cross, you'll be happy right now AND when you finally achieve your big goal!
4. Don't dwell on the negative.
No matter how hard you work to be happy, there are going to be things that pop up from time to time that make you unhappy. Don't allow them to take up any more of your attention than they require. The faster you move on from them, the happier you'll be!
In his book How to Get What You Want, Wallace D. Wattles wrote:
"Getting what you want is success..."
Well, I've discovered over the years the same can be said of happiness. Getting what you want is happiness. The key word there is "getting". In other words, the happiness, just as the success, is in the getting, not the having.
So, if you're not happy, my best advice to you right now is get actively involved in the pursuit of something that's important and meaningful to you, and I think you'll find, as I have, your happiness quotient (the percent of time you're happy) will skyrocket!
