In the book for which he's best known, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill wrote:
"Mind control is the result of self-discipline and habit. You either control your mind or it controls you. There is no halfway compromise. The most practical of all methods for controlling the mind is the habit of keeping it busy with a definite purpose, backed by a definite plan. Study the record of any man who achieves noteworthy success, and you will observe that he has control over his own mind, moreover, that he exercises that control and directs it toward the attainment of definite objectives. Without this control, success is not possible."
Let's take a closer look at that:
"Mind control is the result of self-discipline and habit. You either control your mind or it controls you. There is no half-way compromise. The most practical of all methods for controlling the mind is the habit of keeping it busy with a definite purpose..."
For me and those I've taught over the years that equates to a next level vision that reflects what's truly important to you and what you really want...
"... backed by a definite plan."
Not initially necessary in my opinion, as, if you're clear about what you want, it reflects what's truly important to you and what you really want, and you're moving toward it, the necessary ways and means will come to you along the way.
"Study the record of any man who achieves noteworthy success, and you will observe he has control over his own mind, moreover, that he exercises that control and directs it towards the attainment of definite objectives. Without this control, success is not possible."
Guess what?
He's absolutely right...
It isn't!
Here's the deal:
In his book How to Get What You Want, Wallace D. Wattles wrote:
"Getting what you want is success..."
If you want success, then you need to take control of your mind and direct it toward what you want, not toward what you don't want. In other words, you must keep your thoughts on what you want and off what you don't want.
How do you do that?
The best way I know of is to have a crystal clear next level vision that reflects what's truly important to you and what you really want. Then, whenever you find yourself thinking about what you don't want, regardless of what it may be, you simply, gently switch your thoughts to your vision.
The clearer your vision is and the more it reflects what's truly important to you and what you really want next in your life, the easier that is to do.

Note: There are a number of versions of Think and Grow Rich on Amazon. The one I link to above is the one I personally own and use.
Note: If you're a student of Mr. Wattles' writings, as I am, I highly recommend you read books and articles outside his writings selectively (very selectively!), if at all, with your "Wallace D. Wattles glasses" on. What's that mean? It means if you're going to read something outside his writings, you do so from the perspective of or through the "lens" of Mr. Wattles' writings and reject or modify anything that conflicts with them. What if you can't do that? What if you tend to get easily confused or off track? Then I don't, repeat don't, recommend your reading whatever it is your considering reading, at least not right now.

Here's a related tidbit from Napoleon Hill's book "Think and Grow Rich" that's well worth noting:
"For the benefit of those seeking vast riches, let it be remembered that practically the sole difference between Henry Ford and a majority of the more than one hundred thousand men who work for him, is this - FORD HAS A MIND AND CONTROLS IT, THE OTHERS HAVE MINDS WHICH THEY DO NOT TRY TO CONTROL."
