What Do Original Substance, Formless Substance, and Other Terms Mean?

In a survey I conducted, a reader wrote:

"Dear Tony,

I'm reading The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles, but am having trouble understanding some of the terms in it.

This is really humbling and yet discouraging. How can I learn to think and act in the Certain Way if I don't understand exactly what Wallace D. Wattles meant by these five terms: Original Substance, Formless Substance, Formless Stuff, Thinking Substance, and Thinking Stuff.

Can you define them for me?

Thank you in advance!"

You're welcome in advance!

In his preface to The Science of Getting Rich, Wallace D. Wattles wrote:

"The monistic theory of the universe..."

The "theory" upon which his entire philosophy was based...

"... the theory that One is All, and that All is One; that one Substance manifests itself as the seeming many elements of the material world - is of Hindu origin, and has been gradually winning its way into the thought of the western world for two hundred years. It is the foundation of all the Oriental philosophies, and of those of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Emerson."

Those five terms: Original Substance, Formless Substance, Formless Stuff, Thinking Substance, and Thinking Stuff, along with a number of others he used over the years, are but various names he used when referring to the one Substance from which all things are made.

In fact, lest there be any doubt, in "Whence Comes the Power?", the second of three articles in his The Powerful Life series, Mr. Wattles wrote:

"All things are forms of one Substance; that Substance is conscious and intelligent; it is Spirit. In former articles and in my books I have referred to this Original Substance under various names, as the supreme, the Thinking Stuff, God, All-Mind and so on; but throughout these lessons I shall use the one word, Spirit. Substance is Spirit; everything is Spirit; there isn't anything but Spirit."

Call It what you will, Original Substance, Formless Substance, Formless Stuff, Thinking Substance, Thinking Stuff, Supreme, God, All-Mind, or Spirit, the bottom line is this:

"One is All" and "All is One"!

Go back and reread The Science of Getting Rich with that in mind, and it'll take on a whole new meaning to you.

Important Note: This concept of the oneness of it all is absolutely vital to your understanding all that Mr. Wattles wrote. If you get it, really get it (and by "get it" here I mean understand and accept it), all the rest will fall into place. If you don't, it won't. It's that simple! If you need some help grasping this concept, the resources cited above are a great place to start.
