In a survey I conducted, a reader wrote:
"Have you watched the 2006 movie The Secret? It's similar to The Science of Getting Rich. What do you think?"
After nearly ten years of answering many hundreds of questions concerning it, mostly of the how do I get something for nothing variety, much against my better judgement, I reluctantly sat down and watched Rhonda Byrne's 2006 movie The Secret, which, although it's said to be its inspiration and it does share some similarities, at a surface level anyway, it doesn't, in my opinion, accurately reflect the principles Wallace D. Wattles laid out in his 1910 book The Science of Getting Rich.
Quite frankly, relative to Mr. Wattles' teachings, I think The Secret was overhyped... grossly overhyped!
On the plus side, The Secret did a pretty good job of:
1. Explaining that you need to get clear on what you want as a first step to getting what you want.
2. Exposing millions of people, the vast majority of them for the first time, to the power of thought and the idea of what some refer to as the law of attraction (I prefer to look at it as directivity rather than attraction).
3. Making people aware that getting what you want in life can be reduced down to a simple formula.
The problem?
The formula The Secret teaches (ask, believe, receive) leaves out one very important part of the process and it is this:
The need for personal action!
I can't even begin to tell you of all the horror stories I've heard since The Secret first came out of folks who asked, believed, and then sat around waiting to receive while their worlds came tumbling down around them.
My advice?
Don't you be one of them!
If you've yet to watch The Secret, I don't suggest you do. If, on the other hand, you have, I suggest forgetting what you learned from it and sticking to Mr. Wattles' system for getting what you want.

Note: This reader also asked me about the 2004 movie What the Bleep Do We Know? I haven't watched that movie, nor, quite frankly, do I intend to. I'll let you know if that changes, however, if I did, based on what I've read and the questions I've been asked about it, I have a feeling my opinion of it would be much the same as it is on The Secret.
