In reference to my comment to a recent post (What Should and Shouldn't You Imagine When You Visualize?), a reader wrote:
"Can you please give an example of what the following statement means:
'You do not receive the things you desire; you receive the things with which you mentally unite yourself. When you mentally unite yourself with a thing which you desire, you will receive that thing; and when you mentally unite yourself with a thing which you do not desire, you will receive that thing. When desirable things come into your life, it is because you have been in mental unity with them, and when undesirable things come, it is for the same reason.'
What exactly did Mr. Wattles mean by 'mental unity'?"
Hmm...
Let's start with my entire comment to that blog post, which was:
"Another thing you shouldn't mentally experience is what you don't want.
Why?
Well, in 'Unity with the Things You Want', the eighth of fifteen articles in his 'Lessons in Constructive Science' series, Mr. Wattles put it this way:
'You do not receive the things you desire; you receive the things with which you mentally unite yourself. When you mentally unite yourself with a thing which you desire, you will receive that thing; and when you mentally unite yourself with a thing which you do not desire, you will receive that thing. When desirable things come into your life, it is because you have been in mental unity with them, and when undesirable things come, it is for the same reason.'
Some serious time spent pondering that quote will be time well spent...
Extremely well spent!
It's one of the most important lessons you could possibly learn here."
Doesn't sound like we spent a whole heck of a lot of time pondering here, does it? Especially given the importance I placed on it.
You know, when I receive questions like this, I'm tempted to answer something like:
"Here, let me think about that for you."
Or maybe:
"Here, let me buy that article and read it for you."
Really!!
That said, Mr. Wattles was essentially saying that you don't get what you want, you get what you're mentally at one with, what you imagine yourself as having. If, mentally, in your imagination, you have that which you want, that's what you'll have. On the other hand, if, mentally, in your imagination, you have that which you don't want, that's what you'll have as well, regardless of what you say you want.
In other words, your outer, physical world is merely a reflection of your inner, mental world.
I like the way James Allen put it in his little book As a Man Thinketh:
"Mind is the Master power that moulds and makes,
And Man is Mind, and evermore he takes
The tool of Thought, and, shaping what he wills,
Brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills: -
He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass:
Environment is but his looking-glass."
Again:
"You do not receive the things you desire; you receive the things with which you mentally unite yourself. When you mentally unite yourself with a thing which you desire, you will receive that thing; and when you mentally unite yourself with a thing which you do not desire, you will receive that thing. When desirable things come into your life, it is because you have been in mental unity with them, and when undesirable things come, it is for the same reason."
It's that simple!

Tip: When you find a passage in Mr. Wattles' writings that you don't quite understand or is especially meaningful to you, write it down on a piece of paper or a three-by-five card, stick it in your pocket, carry it everywhere you go, and read and ponder it every chance you get. I've done this with dozens of passages from Mr. Wattles' writings over the years. As a matter of fact, it might interest you to know that I carried the passage from Unity with the Things You Want that I quoted and pondered its meaning and how I could implement it into my life for months, many months!
