Most people have at least one bad habit. If you don't, then you can just stop reading now.
If you're still reading this, then you should feel proud because you're admitting to yourself that you have bad habits in your life. Maybe your bad habits didn't appear to be a big deal at first. You probably thought that you could quit them anytime. Sometimes there are smokers who can quit anytime too.
In the beginning, bad habits give you a great feeling inside. You naturally want to keep feeling that great sensation, so you keep on doing it. You figure a little bit more never hurt anybody, right?
When it came to your spouse, it was difficult the first time you had to lie to them. But as the lies kept piling up, it got easier. Things like this typically get easier as you continue to give in to your bad habits. It's like a drug addiction that you can't quit. You'll do whatever it takes to rationalize your reason for taking them.
If you're ready to stop your bad habits and regain control of your life, then you must identify what your bad habits are. Take out a piece of paper and write down all your bad habits onto it. These can be the smallest bad habits too, such as complaining to your spouse or cutting people off in traffic. Maybe you say things to your kids that you regret. Whatever the bad habits are, you need to know what they are first by writing them down.
Be very descriptive when you identify your habit. Write down how many times per day or week that you indulge in it. Indicate how your life has negatively changed because of it. Does it cost a lot of money to indulge your addiction? If so, write down the amount of money that you normally spend per day, week, month, and/or year. The longer an addiction continues to be indulged, the harder it will be to stop it. So, there's no better time to start quitting your addiction than now.
Aside from the financial burden that your addiction causes, the emotional and physical suffering it causes can feel much worse. Maybe you have goals that you want to achieve, but then your addiction is stopping you from achieving them. You'll be wasting so much time, money, and power if you continue giving in to them. The emotional suffering will impact your mind so much that you will try coping with the addiction rather than fighting to get rid of it.
What are the good habits that you'd like to obtain? Write them down next to your list of bad habits. Make each good habit the opposite of the bad habit on your list. For instance, if your bad habit is watching too much television, then you could make your good habit something like going to the gym or spending quality time with your family outside. Create a timeframe for when you want to convert your bad habit into this new good habit.
Your list should be kept somewhere that's clearly visible to you daily. It's easy to form bad habits and difficult to form good habits. But if you can keep reminding yourself of the good habits that you want to achieve, then you'll continue to receive encouraging reinforcement by keeping the list in front of you. It'll be difficult in the beginning, but if you keep replacing those bad habits with good ones in your mind, then it'll be easier to make it a reality.
The next step is to modify your daily routine. Be sure to avoid anyone or anything that'll remind or tempt you to fall back into your bad habit. As your bad habit begins leaving your mind and you feel emptiness there, replace that emptiness with a good habit that feels wonderful. It's okay to get help if you need it because this isn't an easy process to get started with. However, you'll eventually become stronger both physically and emotionally. You just need to keep working on overcoming those bad habits and never give up. In the end, the choice to change is up to you.
