In Chapter 7 of the book for which he's best known, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill wrote:
"Life's greatest tragedy consists of men and women who earnestly try, and fail! The tragedy lies in the overwhelmingly large majority of people who fail, as compared to the few who succeed.
I have had the privilege of analyzing several thousand men and women, 98% of whom were classed as 'failures'. There is something radically wrong with a civilization, and a system of education, which permit 98% of the people to go through life as failures. But I did not write this book for the purpose of moralizing on the rights and wrongs of the world; that would require a book a hundred times the size of this one.
My analysis work proved that there are thirty major reasons for failure, and thirteen major principles through which people accumulate fortunes. In this chapter, a description of the thirty major causes of failure will be given. As you go over the list, check yourself by it, point by point, for the purpose of discovering how many of these causes of failure stand between you and success."
He then on to list and describe those causes, the second of which was:
"Lack of a well-defined purpose in life."
About which he wrote:
"There is no hope of success for the person who does not have a central purpose, or definite goal at which to aim. Ninety-eight out of every hundred of those whom I have analyzed, had no such aim. Perhaps this was the major cause of their failure."
Ya think!!
In my opinion, based on my own experience and that of personally coaching and training many hundreds of people over the years in Wallace D. Wattles' principles, lack of a clear and definite vision (my version of "a well-defined purpose") based on what's truly important to you and what you really want next in your life is the number one cause of failure, bar none!
So, if you're failing in life (not getting what you want in life, as Mr. Wattles might define it), my advice to you today is to get that fixed. Do that and I think you'll find everything else will fall into place rather nicely.
Need some help in that regard? I highly recommend my Wallace D. Wattles Quick Start Guide and my Wallace D. Wattles Advanced Vision Guide, read in that order. Note: There are a number of versions of Think and Grow Rich ion Amazon. The one I link to above is the one I personally own and use.
Note: If you're a student of Mr. Wattles' writings, as I am, I highly recommend you read books and articles outside his writings selectively (very selectively!), if at all, with your "Wallace D. Wattles glasses" on. What's that mean? It means if you're going to read something outside his writings, you do so from the perspective of or through the "lens" of Mr. Wattles' writings and reject or modify anything that conflicts with them. What if you can't do that? What if you tend to get easily confused or off track? Then I don't, repeat don't, recommend your reading whatever it is your considering reading, at least not right now.

What was Napoleon Hill's first major cause of failure?
It was:
"Unfavorable hereditary background."
About which he wrote:
"There is but little, if anything, which can be done for people who are born with a deficiency in brain power. This philosophy offers but one method of bridging this weakness — through the aid of the Master Mind. Observe with profit, however, that this is the ONLY one of the thirty causes of failure which may not be easily corrected by any individual."
Note Dr. Hill's use of the word "ONLY" there!
