Goal Setting

4 Steps for Turning Your Goal into Reality

If you've ever fallen short of a goal, you're not alone. In fact, lots of people wind up in a goal cycle - meaning they set a goal, give up on it shortly afterwards, and then start the process over again. By the time all is said and done, they haven't accomplished a thing!

How's it possible to get stuck in a rut like this?

The biggest reason is a lack of commitment. If you're not committed to something, you're going to put it on the backburner. And, remember, working toward any goal is going to come with challenges and setbacks. If you're not truly committed, you'll give up as soon as the going gets tough!

How can you make it easier to fully commit to your goal?

1. Make sure it's really important.

This sounds obvious, but oftentimes, people set a goal they THINK they should strive for, instead of actually believing it's important. So, dig deep into your heart, and think about what you really want - and then figure out which specific goal will help get you there. Think about what kinds of positive changes the goal will bring to your life and the way you'll feel when you've actually accomplished it. As you're brainstorming, write everything down so you can look at your list whenever working towards your goal gets hard or unpleasant.

2. Imagine what your life would be like if you didn't achieve the goal.

What kind of negative consequences will you suffer if you don't turn this goal into reality? Will you miss out on something you love? Will you lose a little bit of respect for yourself? This is one time where thinking about all of the negatives can really pay off!

If your life won't really change all that much if you fall short of your goal, it's probably the wrong goal. Remember, your goal needs to actually be important to you if you want to achieve it!

3. Make an ongoing commitment.

Committing to a goal is easy in the beginning because it's new and fresh, and you're chock full of motivation. However, all those good feelings will fade over time. That's why writing down your thoughts is so important. Reviewing them on a regular basis (even every morning when you wake up, if you have to!) will remind you of how important this goal is and how much you really want it.

4. Take personal responsibility.

At the end of the day, no one can achieve your goal for you. Whether you succeed or fail is completely up to you. If you start to put your goal on the backburner, it's up to you to make it a priority again. No matter what challenges and obstacles come your way, you're responsible for how it all turns out.

And whatever you do, don't let things like procrastination or inactivity stop you! Instead of accepting these things as traits you can't change, view them as bad habits you'll have to break if you want to succeed. When you take full control of the situation, it's much easier to turn your goal into reality!

If your goal, or vision as I prefer to call it, is right for you, you'll find it relatively easy to commit to and realize. In other words, if you get that right everything else will fall into place.
