When I was thinking about how I'd reply to a reader's question, which I answered, along with several others, in a recent post (Was Wallace D. Act Now by Being a Doer Rather Than a Thinker

There are two types of people in this world: the doers and the thinkers. Some of us are natural doers who don't need any encouragement. Others of us only think about what we want to do without actually taking action by doing it.

Fortunately, it's possible to turn yourself from a thinker to a doer. If you want to be successful, you need to learn how to do this.

It all starts with developing the proper mindset. Doers are always ready to take action because they're great at organization. They can complete one task and then move right on to the next task without thinking about it. Organization allows this to take place.

On the other hand, disorganization keeps you stuck in one place because you're surrounded by physical and/or mental distractions. If you can eliminate the distractions by organizing your life properly, then taking action will become much easier.

Doers always seem like they're highly energetic. What's their secret? Basically, they're hungry for the action. They get an adrenaline rush when it comes to doing things and accomplishing tasks. This rush keeps them moving and filled with energy.

For thinkers, they end up exhausting themselves by dwelling over their thoughts, feelings, and insecurities. By the time they're ready to try taking action, they're too tired to do so. What's worse is they notice how little progress they've made toward their goals or objectives, which causes them to feel depressed, angry, exhausted, and overwhelmed. It becomes a back and forth cycle that they can't get out of.

To break the cycle, you can do the following:

1. Create a to-do list.

A to-do list organizes all the things you need to do within a given time period. Make this list your top priority each day. As you accomplish things on the list, cross them off and enjoy the satisfaction you feel from it. That satisfaction becomes an adrenaline rush to want to accomplish more things.

2. Give yourself a reward.

Once you accomplish everything that you wrote on your to-do list, give yourself a reward for all the hard work you did. Use these rewards as incentives to complete the things on your to-do list each time you make one. You'll keep getting an adrenaline rush if you do this.

3. Visualize.

Thinkers often have big imaginations. Use your imagination to visualize yourself accomplishing certain tasks successfully. Visualize every little detail about the task and the work involved to complete it. You'll notice a sudden rush of energy as you do this. Once you experience this rush, go out and accomplish those tasks for real.

4. Let your adrenaline push you forward.

Each time you accomplish something, no matter how small, you'll experience an adrenaline rush. Utilize this energy by letting it guide you toward the next task. It's like marathon training where you start to get a bigger adrenaline rush after you've run a couple of miles already. That adrenaline allows you to run even more miles in order to finish the marathon.

5. Concentrate on solutions.

Thinkers and doers approach problems differently. Doers believe there's a solution to every problem, while thinkers believe certain problems have no solution. To get out of the "no solution" mindset, you must always focus on a solution to every problem. For many thinkers, this could take some time. But it will happen eventually.

6. Hang around other doers.

People who take action in their lives are often the happiest people you'll ever meet. Spend time with these people because it always feels better to be around happy, positive people. Then you'll become happy and will find it easier to alter your mindset into a "take action" mindset.

The very first time that I read Wallace D. Wattles' Power Correspondence School lessons, these two passages in particular jumped out at me:

"In order to get what you want, you must act..."

And...

"... you must reach what you want by ACTING; by doing things."

Couldn't have been much more explicit, could he?

Yet, it never ceases to amaze me how many folks who claim to be following his philosophy sit around on their butts all day trying to hocus-pocus their way to success (success being, as Mr. Wattles defined it in his book How to Get What You Want, "getting what you want").

My advice?

Don't you be one of them!

How Do You Create the Right Mindset for Success?

Some people argue that success is the end result of careful planning and execution. Without the right action plan, you can't possibly hope to succeed.

But that argument doesn't really hold water when you dig deeper into it.

After all, how do you explain it when two people attempt to achieve the same goal - and use the same action plan to try and get there - but only one of them succeeds? Is it sheer luck? A matter of good timing?

Nope.

More often than not, the successful person has one very important thing that the other person doesn't - the right mindset.

Your mindset is the way that you think about, focus on, and expect certain things from your daily experiences. If you have a negative mindset, you'll expect the worst and feel pessimistic about your options. And you know what? That means you'll likely draw the negative right into your life.

But, on the other hand, if you have a positive mindset, you'll expect the best. You'll be able to focus on a successful outcome, and most of the time, that's exactly what you'll get!

Here's why:

1. The right mindset boosts your self-confidence.

If you don't believe in yourself, you probably see no point in trying anything because you feel powerless. There's no point in even attempting to be successful because it won't happen.

But when you have a positive mindset, you believe that you can go out and succeed. As a result, you're willing to (legitimately!) give something your best shot. And, the more you do - and the more you succeed at - the more self-confidence you'll build. Eventually, you'll be unstoppable!

2. The right mindset makes you more determined.

If you have a negative mindset, tenacity and determination simply don't exist in your world. If you don't become a raging success the very first time you try something, you assume that it wasn't meant to be. Unfortunately, though, most of the big goals aren't achieved on the first go-around! To truly get what you want, you usually have to try and fail a few times along the way.

When you have a positive mindset, you know that failure isn't the end of the story. In fact, you believe that the real failure is to stop trying altogether.

3. The right mindset creates the right action plan.

If you have a negative mindset - and, thus, don't believe in yourself - you may feel intimidated by some of the steps in your action plan. As a result, you try and skip them, or you search for a less scary way to achieve your goal. Unfortunately, that simply won't work!

With a positive mindset, you'll have the self-confidence and the determination to pursue the proper action plan. You won't try to skip over anything or search in vain for other alternatives.

So, how do you create the right mindset?

  • Think positively.
  • Believe in yourself.
  • Believe that you can do better.
  • Be willing to learn, grow, and develop so that you can do better.
  • Be willing to take chances.
  • Expect the best in every situation.
  • Be willing to fail.
  • Get back up when you fall down.
  • Give it your all, each and every time.

Follow these steps and you can't help but be successful!

What's success?

The very best definition I ever came across was in Wallace D. Wattles' book How to get What You Want. Here it is:

"Getting what you want is success..."

That's it! It's that simple...

"Getting what you want is success..."

He went on to say this about it:

"... and success is an effect, coming from the application of a cause. Success is essentially the same in all cases; the difference is in the things the successful people want, but not in the success. Success is essentially the same, whether it results in the attainment of health, wealth, development or position; success is attainment, without regard to the things attained. And it is a law in nature that like causes always produce like effects; therefore, since success is the same in all cases, the cause of success must be the same in all cases."
